Our principal advisor graduated from Harvard College summa cum laude — the highest honour awarded to Harvard undergraduates. This award requires an academic department to recommend a student for highest honors based on a senior thesis. Then, the student's overall GPA must be in the top 5%. To our knowledge, our advisor is the only Harvard summa graduate offering family advisory services in Asia.

Thomas Ryou, MD, is a physician-entrepreneur, mentor, and founder of the 1636 advisory. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College and received his doctorate from Stanford University. He completed his medical training in child health and development at Columbia University Medical Center, New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, UCLA Medical Center, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. His subsequent work as a physician in the U.S. and China gave him a unique understanding of pediatric medicine not just as a science but as a human experience — shaped by culture, economics, geography, and the trust between doctor and family. He has treated complex diseases in the most vulnerable populations — providing comfort to families in their worst moments, advising parents through high-stakes decisions, and helping their children reach their full potential.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Ryou is a member of the Harvard Club of Boston — one of the most prestigious alumni organizations in the U.S. He also contributes to Harvard's governance through his participation in the school's Board of Overseers election. Further, he is a member of the 1636 Loyalty Society at Harvard University and a patron of the Harvard Club of Hong Kong — reflecting a sustained commitment to the next generation of students through ongoing philanthropic giving. Lastly, Dr. Ryou has donated his time as an alumni interviewer for applicants to Harvard University and has served on admissions committees for postgraduate education at UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center — the top two tertiary-care academic medical institutions in Los Angeles.
